OBETSEBI LAMPTEY INTERCHANGE FLYOVER Phase I and II
GHANA
Project justification
The project aims to relieve traffic congestion by improving the existing roundabout and also building two flyovers. In short, quality of life for drivers, pedestrians and citizens.
We designed the project in two integrated ‘levels’. Both are complementary and together they will combat the accumulation of vehicles at the intersection of two of downtown Accra’s main arteries. In addition, it will improve driver and pedestrian safety, and promote the local economy and the exchange of goods and services.
Phase 1: Construction of an east-west flyover. Project completed.
Phase 2: Construction of a north-south flyover; upgrading of the existing Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout to ground level; and implementation of adjacent drainage works. Project under construction.
Phase 1
- 390 m east-west viaduct with two lanes in each direction. In addition, ancillary works including access ramps and storm drainage improvement measures.
Phase 2
- 400 m long, 18.8 m wide north-south viaduct with two lanes in each direction.
- Widening of Ring Road West – Obetsebi Lamptey.
- Widening of Ring Road West and Winneba Road.
- Adequate provision of pedestrian crossings and footbridges.
- Improvement of drainage system between Nii Teiko Din Road and Dr. Busia Road.
- Storm drainage improvement measures at Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout.
- Improved pedestrian movement at ground level, including commercial activity.
- Provision of street lighting for night-time safety.
- Landscaping.
We developed the project in accordance with the IFC’s Environmental and Social Performance Standards. This includes a Resettlement Action Plan and ongoing contact with traders with businesses in the area.
We also expect to reduce noise levels and exhaust emissions by improving traffic flow, reduce flooding in the area during the rainy season through drainage and sanitation works, and increase safety, particularly at night, through the installation of lighting.
